How Adoption Works

We take time to make the right match. No same-day adoptions — just thoughtful, lasting connections.

Browse the Cats

Explore profiles for all available cats. Each cat has photos, a biography, and their temperament notes.

Visit & Connect

Schedule a visit — Mon–Fri 7–9 PM or weekends by appointment. All household members are expected to meet the cat before placement.

Submit Your Application

Complete the online adoption application. If renting, include proof that cats are permitted.

Review & Counseling

Our adoption team reviews every application and will contact all references listed. It can take up to 5 days to review an application.

Schedule & Take Home

Once approved, schedule your pickup. Pickup is by scheduled appointment on Saturday and Sunday.

Important Adoption Policies

  • No same-day adoptions — all applications are reviewed by our adoption team.
  • All household members are expected to meet the cat before approval.
  • Renters must provide written proof that cats are permitted.
  • All adopted cats must remain strictly indoors (exceptions: catios, strollers, harness training).
  • Declawing is not permitted as a condition of adoption.
  • Adoption applications do not guarantee placement.

Need to Surrender a Cat or Found a Stray?

AHS is a limited admissions shelter. If you need to surrender or found a stray, you must contact the shelter first at 907-230-6394 or ahscatshelter@gmail.com to set up an appointment.

If you are in a desperate situation and need to surrender your cat or found a stray, please utilize the night drop at Anchorage Animal Care and Control located at 4711 Elmore Avenue.

Please do not leave a cat unattended outside the shelter facility under any circumstances.
