Immediate Steps for Found Cats
Step 1: Ensure Safety First
Don't put yourself at risk. If the cat is in a dangerous location (traffic, severe cold), assess before approaching. Use a towel or carrier to handle safely if needed.
Step 2: Assess Condition
Check if the cat is well-fed, clean, and approachable.
Step 3: Check for a Microchip
Any veterinary clinic and Anchorage Animal Care and Control can scan for a microchip. If it is after-hours, an emergency vet clinic can scan for a microchip. This is the fastest way to reunite a cat with their owner.
Step 4: Contact Animal Care and Control
Contact Anchorage Animal Care and Control to report the found cat or inquire about municipal intake resources.
Step 5: Contact AHS
Please do not bring a found cat to AHS without contacting us first. Our volunteers are not present on site at all times. Also, we are a limited-admission shelter and may not have space. We can help you understand your options.
