Open Concept Model
Unlike traditional animal shelters that confine cats to small cages, the Alaska Humane Society Adopt-A-Cat Shelter operates on an open concept model. Our shelter features spacious, climate-controlled rooms where most of our cats roam freely, climb cat trees, lounge in sunny spots, and interact naturally with volunteers and prospective adopters.
🏠 Main Floor (Upstairs & Downstairs)
Where visitors spend most of their time hanging out and playing! Features cat trees, beds, toys, hidey holes, and ramps across our two-story open-concept shelter.
🛋️ Shy Cat Room & Beluga Room
Located on the second floor for cats who are on the shyer side. Gives shy cats a safer space for dedicated volunteers to work on socialization.
🏥 New Intakes & Special Needs Rooms
Specialized enclosures for new intakes and cats with special needs before transitioning into main open-concept shelter spaces.
🐈 Apartments 1–4
Built to accommodate unique dietary, medical, or behavioral needs, and to provide transition space for cats leaving intake.
